Post-Doctoral Position in Second Language Learning at Koç University

The Language & Communication Development and Language & Cognition Labs at Koç University in Istanbul invite applicants to work on a European Commission H2020-funded project on second language tutoring using social robots (L2TOR) for a 3-year position (renewable upon evaluation after the first year) with a start date of January 2016. The L2TOR project is an international collaboration between 5 universities (Tilburg University, Plymouth University, Utrecht University, University of Bielefeld and Koç University) and 2 industrial partners (Aldebaran Robotics and QBMT).

The L2TOR (pronounced ‘el tutor’) project aims to design a child-friendly tutor robot that can be used to support teaching preschool children a second language (L2) by interacting with children in their social and referential world. In particular, the project will focus on teaching English as L2 to native speakers of Dutch, German and Turkish, and teaching Dutch and German as L2 to immigrant children speaking Turkish as a native language. The L2TOR robot will be designed to interact naturally with children aged four years old in both the second language and the child’s native language. We will hire a post-doc and a research assistant to develop interactions between the robot and children, and evaluate these. The project will start in January 2016 and runs for 3 years.
Applicants are expected to have a PhD in psychology, cognitive science, linguistics or a related discipline. The position involves task development, data collection, data analysis and write-up; the post-doc will be expected to be an active part of the labs, collaborating with graduate and undergraduate students. Previous experience working with children and native-like knowledge of spoken Turkish is desirable. Writing experience and publication record are required. The salary is competitive within the standards of ERC funding. Interested applicants should send a CV, research statement, publications, and name of 2 recommenders to Drs. Aylin Küntay and Tilbe Göksun (akuntay@ku.edu.tr and tgoksun@ku.edu.tr) before the application deadline of November 30. The review process will start immediately and applications will be considered until the position is filled. Informal inquiries can also be sent to these emails.
